Jenny Bicât studied fine art under Howard Hodgkin at Bath Academy of Art and Theatre Design under Margaret Harris at Sadlers Wells. After winning an Arts Council Award she worked in Rep, opera and notably for Portable Theatre the ground-breaking fringe theatre of the Seventies. She has designed for film, multi-media, site-specific performance and fashion. In the Nineties she did a Master’s in Fashion Textiles at De Montefort University travelling all over England to interview surviving textile printers and designers of the Twenties and Thirties. In her studio near Chipping Norton she develops, using traditional (non-digital) screen printing techniques, intricately engineered designs on silk and linen – flat pattern pieces that she hand-sews (then makes) into unique scarves, jackets and occasional décor pieces. She delights in combining painterly use of colour with modern geometry; the best traditions of Twentieth Century art and craft with the often sculptural experiments of modern fashion.
