Studio Seven Summer School at The Museum in the Park, Stroud

Tuesday 27 July - Sunday 1 August 2010

Following the success of 'Make Do & Mend' which showed at the Museum in February 2010, Studio Seven are back to bring you a week of workshops exploring traditional sewing and textile techniques with a contemporary twist. Learn a new skill this Summer, or make something beautiful to take home, in the welcoming and inspiring setting of the Museum in the Park.

Tuesday 27 July 11am - 4pm Cost: £40 / £35

Jenny Bicat - Stencilling on Fabric

One day workshop suitable for anyone aged 14+. Embellish an existing item of clothing or a plain bag or scarf, or practice designs on scrap fabric - a combination of printing and painting using pigment dyes.

Wednesday 28 July 11am - 4pm Cost: £40 / £35

Sarah Cant - Flower Making Workshop

This one day workshop will explore a range of techniques used in making flowers for fashion, millinery, textile jewellery, or soft furnishings. Participants should have time to make two or three finished flowers using a variety of materials. Suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. Materials supplied by tutor.

Thursday 29 July 10.30am - 12.30pm or 2 - 4pm Cost: £10 per session

Kathryn Clarke - String Purses and Phone Bags

A workshop for keen young designers aged 9 - 19! Make a small bag or purse to hold your mobile phone or games console. Learn new sewing skills and make something original and useful to take home.

Friday 30 July 11am - 4pm Cost: £40 / £35

Anne Rogers - Miniature Felted Garments

Explore the technique of seamless felting round a template. Students will be introduced to the principles of designing and making decorated felted wearables and leave with a selection of beautiful miniature garments

Suitable for all levels - beginners, and those with some experience of felting.

Only 10 places, so early booking recommended.

Saturday 31 July 11am - 4pm Cost: £40 / 35

Sarah Pearson Cooke - Shibori Resist Designs

Learn Shibori resist techniques using non toxic sprays and more traditional methods of dyeing. Shibori is an ancient form of resist dyeing and commonly used to pattern cloth in combination with the striking use of indigo. In this workshop you will explore a variety of resist methods such as binding and stitch resist as well as spray stencilling through unusual materials such as net curtains. You will be patterning a T-shirt or a cotton bag which you can take home. All materials will be provided but please feel free to bring any of your own unusual materials to spray stencil through as well as any additional decorative trimmings.

Sunday 1 August 11am - 4pm Cost: £40 / £35 Kathryn Clarke & Corinne Hockley - New Bags from Old

Bring in any tired or worn-out clothes or old jumpers that are unloved and transform them into a bright new bag using 'make do and mend' techniques. Also bring along any interesting buttons, beads or braids to embellish your creation.

About Studio Seven

The Studio Seven artists work both independently and collaboratively to produce a beautiful and diverse range of textile-based artwork, clothing, fashion accessories, and soft furnishings using printing, dyeing, painting, feltmaking, mixed-media, and millinery techniques. In 2007, they began creating on collaborative projects which bring textiles to audiences in new and surprising contexts. The innovative Textiles in Performance (2007), Make Do & Mend (2008, showing at The Museum in the Park January - February 2010), and Cut 2 on Fold (2009) each explored areas in the rich thematic landscape of textiles and making, and have together established Studio Seven's reputation for creating ground-breaking cross-arts projects. The artists sell their textiles at their workshop at New Brewery Arts in Cirencester.

Studio Seven artists are: Liz Lippiatt, Kathryn Clarke, Jenny Bicāt, Anne Rogers, Sarah Cant, Sarah Cooke, Corinne Hockley.
