Sarah
Pearson Cooke
Sarah Pearson Cooke produces hand dyed textiles based on the
traditional Japanese method of Shibori, in combination with her personal
interpretations of resist dyeing. Sarah also endeavours to minimise the negative
environmental impact of her studio practice and promote the use of fabrics
derived from sustainable, biodegradable or organic fibre.
The current collection is of hand dyed silk scarves
and soft furnishings. As well as developing her range of textiles she is
also involved in public art ventures, workshops and commission work
including work for schools and for the BBC. Sarah initially studied for a
BA (Hons) Creative Arts involving Music, Printmaking and Textiles. She
then furthered her passion for textiles by completing an MA Design:
Textiles in 2004 in which she achieved distinction. She studied for both
at Bath Spa University College.
She creates at her workshop outside Cheltenham,
Gloucestershire, and is a member of the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen
where she regularly exhibits her collection Sarah travels frequently
throughout Europe for research and particularly enjoyed her extended
period of study in Asia where she attended the International Shibori
Symposium in Tokyo, Japan.
Sarah also continues to teach Art at a secondary
school in Cheltenham.
